2005 Artistic Gymnastics World Championships
Dear Pick's Readers, do not go to Melbourne in November if you are allergic to lycra, springing adolecents, and/or sparkly eyeshadow. All will be in plentiful supply at the Rod Laver Arean when the world's best artistic gymnasts will be in Melbourne for the 2005 World Gymnastics Championships. However, if you love to see stretchy young girls do amazing things with ribbons, hoops, and balls then you will be in heaven! The last time Australia hosted this event was in 1994 when Brisbane was the lucky city. Check out this official site to get yourself in the mood. |

My Fellow Australians
G'dday my fello Aussies. Are you dissatisfied with the 200 years of colonial culture offered up by the media as our collective Australian identify? Or are you dissatisfied with attempts to fix our identity in one historical moment or in a single mythologised individual (insert Don Bradman here)? Well, so is online artist Pip Shea. She has created this net art work to vent her frustrations, which was ironically made possible by the Australian Government through the Australia Council New Media Arts Board. Check it out. Its nice to see the Internet being used for something that gets us thinking. |

Save Babe
The movie Babe must have been responsible for thousands of kind-hearted kids around the world deciding to give up bacon for breakfast. Afterall, who could eat such a smart, sensitive creature? That's exactly the question that Animals Australia, the promoters of this campaign to improve conditions for farmed pigs, is asking. Its description of "row after row of pregnant females in tiny metal stalls barely able to move" is certainly enough to put you off your ham sandwich. Read this site and decide for yourself if it is worth it or not. |

Heard & McDonald Islands
Yesterday, Australian scientists observed volcanic activity on Australia's most remote territory - McDonald Island in the sub-Antarctic. This on-going burbling and bubbling beneath the crust is changing the shape of the island (it has more than doubled in size since 2001)and ultimately changing the environmental make-up of its cold and wind-swept surface. But don't worry, none of your fellow Aussies are in danger ... unless you consider macaroni penguins to be your national kin. But the island is within the Heard Island and McDonald Islands (HIMI) Marine Reserve, one of the world's biggest marine reserves, and noone seems exactly sure what the outcome of all this volcanic activity will be for its wildlife neighbours. |
